What is periodontal disease and gingivitis? What are the symptoms and how do we treat it? To find the answers to these questions continue reading on.
What Is the Difference Between the Two?
Gingivitis causes the gums to become red and inflamed due to the buildup of bacteria found in plaque. Your gums may even begin to bleed after brushing your teeth. Gingivitis does not cause bone loss or tissue damage. When left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Your gum and bone will begin to pull away from your tooth, and the pockets become infected. The plaque will begin to grow below the gum line causing your bone and gum tissue to get badly affected. Finally, the teeth may begin to loosen and lead to tooth loss.
What Are the Causes of Gum Disease?
Gum disease can be caused by a wide range of things including the following reasons:
- Smoking
- Hormonal changes

- Genetics
Symptoms for gum disease may include bleeding, tender, and swollen gums, bad breath, shifting and loose teeth, receding gums, deep pockets between your gums and teeth, and changes in the bite of your teeth.
